5 Tenets of Prepping

As you are prepping, there are 5 tenets to keep in mind.  If you keep these tenets in the forefront of your mind you are less likely to make a mistake.

They are

  • Water
  • Food
  • Security
  • Shelter
  • Sanitation

Water

They say you can exist for 3 minutes without air, 3 days without water and 3 weeks without food.  While I am sure some of you can hold your breath for longer, it is not something we prep for in the beginning stages.  As far as common disasters which will occur running out of air is not one of them.  So we move to water.  Water is necessary for life, without it you will die.  By this fact it is imperative to store and have a means to purify water.  You should try and store about 1 week worth of water for every person in your family.  At a minimum it is one gallon per person per day.  If you have the means and the storage area, please store more.

Purifying water is more of a personal preference.  Some people have water that does not taste good and they run it through a filter all the time.  Some have great tasting water and do not need anything done to it.  You do need the ability to purify water in case of an emergency.  We have all heard of the “mandatory boil water advisory”.  In this case it would be wise to have something to filter the water of its contaminants.  I recommend a Berkey for your daily water filtering.  If a Berkey is too expensive,  then any general backpacking filter will work well in most emergencies.  You can also have a stove which can function without electricity around to boil water.

Water is heavy and takes up space.  I would recommend you to try to store water in various places in your house.

  • under a bed
  • in a closet
  • basement
  • crawl space, only if it doesn’t freeze

The key to storing water is just like everything else we store and prep for.  Rotation.  Please remember to rotate your water often.  Have extra filters.

What other ways do you store water?
