Getting Started – Changing from a Grasshopper to an Ant

Many ask the question, “How do I get started?”  Prepping 101 is about giving you ideas to get started.

First thing you will need to do is determine where you are in your life before you start prepping. Have you spent your whole life not prepping?  That’s ok you are the normal average American.  How many years have you spent being unprepared?  Be grateful you have awakened yourself.  It took you many years of being unprepared, it will take years to become prepared.  This is now a lifestyle change, not buying more stuff to put in your basement just in case.

You now have to decide where you are.  Start with determining how much food do you have in your home.  List how many meals you have in your home.  Write it down on a piece of paper.  If you want 30 days worth of food you need to know how many days you have to start with.

Start storing food.  Start copy canning.  When you go to the store to buy corn, buy two cans instead of one.  Put the second one in storage.  Do this until you have 30 days worth of food or whatever amount of food you want in your home.

Start making a documentation book.  One in each car, 0ne in the house

  • List of all the people you may want to get a hold of and all the numbers and addresses for them
  • List of services, these are people you call in case of emergency
    • Tree trimming
    • Plumbing
    • Electrical
    • HVAC
    • Roofing
    • Masonry
    • Carpentry
    • Drywall
  • 3 places you would go and 3 routes to get to each place.  All of the places will be far apart.  Make sure you put the names and phone #’s of each place.  If you choose hotels in an area pick 3-4 hotels in each area.  Print out each place from Google Maps with the 3 different ways to get there.  Put it in your book.

Organize your pantry.  You may realize you have more food than you thought.  Now with your pantry organized it will make your copy canning easier.

If you really feel overwhelmed, go to the store and buy some beans, rice, pasta and sauce.  This will get you immediate sense of relief.  You can do this for less than $50.

Get out of debt.  As you know this is something we preach often around here.  Debt makes you a slave to the lender.  I think getting out of debt is so important you may put some of your preps on hold until you get out of debt.  You could easily store 30-60 days worth of food and cash and then all you do is put your money into getting out of debt.  Making a budget is the easiest way to cut money out.  Make a list of your debts in order from smallest to largest.  Start with the smallest and apply as much money as possible until it is paid off.  Take the payment from the last bill and apply it to the next until they are paid off.

Start cutting expenses.  You can always add them back later if you feel they are needed again.  Cut, cut, cut until you can cut no more and then live like this for 3 months and if you want to add something back, do so.

Understand the commonality of disaster and use it to make your preps easier.  What is the most likely thing to happen?  A personal disaster is the most common.  What will having food mean if you lose your job?  What will having some cash mean if you get sick?  What will life insurance mean if you spouse dies?  If you start planning for the most common things you will be 90%. prepared.  We do not plan for specific threats, we plan for the general disaster to happen.

Realize and OWN your plan. No one will have the same plan as you.  If you have your own plan you will not be able to blame someone else for the failure of their plan.  You will also be the one to reap the success of the plan YOU implemented.

Be prepared to protect yourself.  This means having something both lethal and non lethal.  Get training on how to protect yourself and your family.  You may have to start with pepper spray and some self-defense training.  Becoming armed is an increase in responsibility.  Being armed means you are going to avoid conflict at a greater cost.  When you bring a gun to a fight it automatically becomes a gun fight.  Are you ready for this?

Last is understanding your success depends on you.  The ownership of your goals, plans and objectives is in your hands.  I can help make suggestions but ultimately it depends on you.

Go forward with confidence knowing the future is brighter today than yesterday.  The steps you take today are steps moving you closer to your goal of personal freedom and liberty.

The Freedom of Being Debt Free

The most common threads on this site are and will continue to be, Debt and Gardening.  I know talking about debt is boring so I wanted to come up with a twist.  Society tells us to continue to have debt until we retire and then it will be ok.  But once you retire after a lifetime of using debt it is hard to get rid of.  My father in law has retired and he still has some debt.  This boggles my mind.  How can a man who is 70 think he can continue to take on debt?  Why do we continue to do this?  Why is enslavement something we aspire to?  So today I wanted to write about what it means to be debt free.

Only a few years ago I was in debt, just like many of you.  I sat down with my wife and we discussed what we were going to do about it.  How could we have let this happen?  Then my dad died.  We were left with a small amount of inheritance.  What would we do with it?  We decided to pay off all our debt but the house.  In my head was screaming ‘serenity now’.   I don’t want the stress of having anymore debt.

So my wife and I began the journey of paying off our debt.  We were not able to pay off everything.  As we moved along in our journey, it didn’t seem like it was going to be possible.

I want to tell you what it is like on the other side for those of you on the same journey.  We were able to pay off everything before the crash.  My existing business was cut in half.  I wish I had heeded the same advice in business.  I had debt there I had to work through.  Though the sales were 50% of what they were the year before, I had to take a 50% pay cut.  The amazing thing was we were actually able to make it through.  We had money put away for a rainy day and it was pouring outside.

What I never realized until things calmed down what a relief it was to have no debt.  I was able to put my head down and go to work without having the burden of payments.  I took a hit on my income and survived.  It seems like things are easier though I still do not make as much money as I used to.

I have realized when you have to work because all your money is spent before the paycheck comes is harder than wondering what to do with the extra you have since there are no payments waiting for you.

Victory is the ability to say to your existing job, ‘I quit’.  It is working less with better quality of life.  It is working more and retiring early.  It is realizing you are not a slave anymore.  The freedom and liberty which comes from being debt free is almost like witnessing birth.  Just like kids, I wish I could have 10 of them.  Debt is something I wish I never had.  I am only glad I realized it earlier rather than later.  It is an accomplishment worth sacrificing for.  I know you can do it.  If you do nothing else, getting out of debt will change your mental state.

What does your Senator stand for?

On Thursday I had the opportunity to attend the caucus meeting for my district to choose our representative to elect our senator  at the upcoming primary election.  By a large margin Orrin Hatch was the victor(Incumbent R-UT).  I was so disappointed in our district.  Not necessarily at the election of Mr. Hatch, with whom I do not agree with, but this is the way the system works, but at the reasons given to keep him.  Here are some of the reasons I heard

  • We should not vote against Hatch but for someone else.  This I agree with, but when you know the person in office is not the right person then you need to get rid of them and find an appropriate replacement.  We do not need to settle.  I think we as voters need to remember we can change who we put in office.  We can stand on principle.
  • He has seniority or will be on a high-ranking committee.  The purpose of the senate and congress in general is to protect our rights.  Giving someone power to tell us what they are going to do to help us is the wrong way to go about it.  We want them to stop taking away our money, not tell us how much we are going to get back.
  • He is electable.  Everyone is electable if we stand behind and support them.  The incumbent is more electable since he has more money.  He has more money since we live in a system where corporations are in cahoots with the government.  We need to start standing up for a system where the elected official represents us, not the other way around.
  • That is the way the system works.  I heard this statement and almost started to cry.  This statement in and of itself is the reason we are in the place we are in. We have to change the way we look at the system.  You may not get back as much money from the feds until you start to change.  Leaders have to lead and it may not be profitable for them initially, but down the road we will all be better for it.
  • If Romney wins then he will need Hatch.  Romney does not need a rubber stamp from Utah.   He needs to present his ideas so the people in Utah will vote for them.  Our state comes first not the other way around.  We do not need Washington to keep saying yes.  We need them to start saying NO.

I get the sense we were voting out of fear.  If we do not vote for the incumbent then things will be bad.  Guess what folks, we have right now what we deserve.  We have an oppresive government because we have voted for people who want an oppressive government.  Until we realize there is going to be pain for everyone involved and we step up to the plate to take care of each other and not have some government entity do it, then we will continually keep passing the buck.

This is why this site and community are so important.  We are trying to prepare ourselves for what we see ahead.  We know it will not be good, but we are going to work to the best of our ability to help as many people as possible.  I want you to realize despite my gloomy Thursday, I am optimistic about the future.  People are waking up.  Two years ago at the same caucus meeting we had 10 people.  This year we had 80.  I can see the worry in their eyes.  I want you to be a light on a hill showing them the way to prosperity is through liberty and freedom.  We will keep showing them when you are prepared you become less of a slave to someone else.  And when the someone else has to go away because of budget cuts or some other reason, then you will be able to step in and help.  This way of life is the way of the future.  It is the solution.  Lets stay together as a community and keep spreading the word.  Get involved in your local politics since it is where the largest difference is made.  But remember what you do matters.

Liberty- Do you want it or not? pt. 2

In my last article I wrote about liberty.  I want to continue with the same theme today.  We will discuss the following

  • Rights and responsibilities
  • Getting everything you want
  • “pretty” liberty
  • Victimless liberty
  • The Liberty you hate
  • You are not born free

Rights and Responsibilities

I think as we talk about being free and having liberty we are lulled into thinking about only one side of the coin.   We tend to focus on the rights side of the equation.

If you don’t vote you may someday lose your right to vote.

This classic line iterates the correlation between rights and responsibilities.  With rights come responsibilities.  The right to free speech comes with the responsibility to speak.  We can not abdicate the responsibility away.  I think sometimes we want to accept some rights and dismiss others.  I believe I have a right to protect my life and as such, I have the right to defend myself by any means possible, which means I have the right to carry a gun for defense.   My responsibility is to have someway of protecting myself.  There are some who may say otherwise, but to think you have the right to free speech but not the right to defend yourself is ludicrous to me.  Just remember when you say you have a right ask yourself what your responsibility is.  By exercising your responsibility, you preserve your right.

Getting everything you want

Liberty does not mean you get everything you want.  Getting everything you want means someone else did not get what they want, since there are finite resources.  We all can’t get what we want.  Liberty means you are able to pursue what you want or not at all, but it is up to you whether you succeed or not.  As an example, if you want free medical care and they take money from me to provide for you, neither one of us have liberty.  You are now being provided for and as such are subject to the entity providing the service.  I am having my money taken from me, which means my work is not my own.  Thinking you have the right to your wants at the expense of others is not liberty.  I think it is theft.

Keeping what you earn is a surefire way to get more out of someone.  If I say you get to keep what you worked for and not having 20-40% given to the government, how much more productive are you going to be?  Liberty is the greatest motivator to the individual.  The main reason the colonists moved here is they could own a piece of land and they were able to keep what they produces off of the land.  They did not have to give some back to the Duke of the land.  They were able to reap what they sowed.  If they did not plant they received nothing.  You have the freedom to receive an A or a F.  Does this mean we leave those who received a F to go hungry?  Of course not.  But we do allow them to fail and then we come in and help them up.  We do not prop them up.  I get to decide who is worthy of my charity.  I do not think it is right to take my money and give to whom YOU see fit.  I of course will do all I can to help those in need as will you.  We just want the choice to be able to do so.

“Pretty” Liberty

Liberty is not always pretty.  There will be people who choose to do things which are not in their best interest.  They are going to do drug, make wrong choices, make religious choices, buy a fast car or whatnot.  There are people when given to do what they want are not going to do what you would do.  This is the point of liberty.  The ability to choose for oneself.  There will be failures, many of them.  If you are not allowed to risk you are unable to receive a great reward.  Some may choose poverty and some may choose to never give their money away.  A society based on liberty is not utopia.  It never will be, but it will be the greatest way to achieve your dreams and goals.

Victimless liberty

There is no such thing as a victimless crime.  Liberty means a crime has a victim.  For me to file assault charges, someone had to be assaulted.  I think if you want to do something to yourself then it should not matter to me.  If you want to abuse yourself then go ahead, as long as it does not encroach on the rights of others.  I know you may say what about if this person is pregnant.  Then we have laws for protecting the rights of that child.  It’s rights are now being violated.  I will always try to help those who have made wrong choices, but I will not make it illegal for you do so.

The liberty you hate

There are those who will do thing you hate.  There will be things like how fast they drive, do they text while driving, they smoke, they will engage in activities you do not approve of.  If you can not allow someone else to do something without it affecting you then you can’t live in liberty.  You are still living in captivity.

If your happiness is dependent upon the actions of others you will always be a slave to them.

We need to let people make their own decisions without it affecting ourselves.  I think debt is horrible and the surest way to enslave a person to another.  This does not mean I think we should outlaw credit cards or debt.  I try to give advice showing why I think debt is bad, but it does not mean we should not let people feel the repercussions of their own actions.

You are not born free

You are born into captivity.  When you are born you are not allowed to do everything you want.  Hopefully your parents were there to guide and show your the correct way to do things.  As you get older you are allowed to make your own decisions and reap the reward or result.  Eventually we understand liberty in its fullest as an adult, which is why we do not let our children do what they want.  We have to understand as adults to help guide those around us toward a liberty lifestyle.  This means we teach them how to grow food, how to get out of debt, become independent, make good decisions, show compassion and service to one another.  The ability to choose for oneself is the greatest gift given to man.  Used wisely it can promote the true worth of the individual, used poorly it can degrade the human being to nothing.

I ask you as a human being, what do you want?  Do you want freedom to make your own decisions or do you want someone to tell you what to do?  Do you want control the actions of others or let them decide for themselves what is best for them?

What does liberty mean to you?

Liberty- Do you want it or not? pt. 1

We often think of liberty as something associated with self-reliance and preparedness.  It seems to be an easy concept.  We are free.  Right?  What really is the definition of freedom?  What is the difference between liberty and captivity?  Is there anywhere in between?

Liberty is a natural state for human beings.  We want to be free.  This does not mean we live in a free society.  We often think of freedom as being associated with democracy.  Nothing could be further from the truth.  There is a saying, it goes something like this,

Democracy is like two wolf and a sheep deciding what’s for dinner.

You see democracy is ruled by majority.  There is not consent for the minority.  The minority’s rights are not protected in this instance.  By definition this is way a democracy works.  Majority rule does not account for the minority.  This is why we have a republic.  It insures the rights of the minority.  The majority can not make a law which infringe on the rights of the minority.

Liberty is a personal thing.  Your definition of liberty is different from mine.  I believe as long as your definition of liberty does not infringe on my definition then all will be well.  I think that is where we get into trouble.  You make think different from me.  As long as we have an honest debate then we can resolve most issues.  Where I think we get into trouble is I think you ought to not be doing what you are doing.  Remember, as long as what you do does not infringe on my rights then I am fine.

We often hear about rights and how they were violated, but we as a general rule forget where they come from.  I think the big issue are those to look to government to grant right or grant freedom.  They can not.  Government is only there to retroactively give retribution to those whose rights have been violated.  They can not create them.  We have to understand that we are given rights by our human nature.  I think most would agree that you have a right to live.  Government can not grant you life.  It can not give you life.  It is only there to protect your life or pay retribution to one who took your life.  If government could grant you life, by default it could decide whose life not to grant and take away life.  The purpose of government is to defend rights when they have been violated.

We next have to look at liberty and the results it has upon us, the individual.  With liberty and rights comes opportunity.  If everyone has the same playing field available it allows all to compete.  This does not mean everyone gets to hit a home run.  Can you hit?  Do you want to play?  Can you see the ball?  Many factors go into hitting a home run.  In this scenario everyone gets to play on the same field but what happens is up to the individual.  Just as in life, if the playing field is level, the outcomes will be different.  This is a basic understanding of liberty.  Each individual gets to choose how they want to play the game of life,  you can hit a home run or not even get up to bat the ball.  But you do get to live with the consequences.

With that each person must be the one to defend liberty.  It is up to us to preach its virtue.  Since liberty is a personal issue for everyone, everyone must be the one to defend it.  By its definition we can not allow government to defend them.  Government enacts retribution when they are violated but they are not the defender of the rights.  We are the defender of the right.

Stay tuned for part 2 where I will discuss

  • Rights and responsibilities
  • Getting everything you want
  • “pretty” liberty
  • Victimless liberty
  • The Liberty you hate
  • You are not born free

Personal Liberty

Personal Liberty

What do you think of when I say ‘personal liberty’?   Maybe it’s freedom, or I can do what I want, or free from government interference.  All of these are true to a certain extent.  But what is liberty really?

Liberty is defined as-

The state of being free within society from oppressive restrictions imposed by authority on one’s way of life, behavior, or political views.

I believe from the above definition, which I think to be correct, we do not live in a country where liberty is promoted.  I think there are many laws enacted by well-meaning idiots which try to dictate what they think you/I  should be doing with our live.  This is not a statement against a particular political party but to the political/government system as a whole.

On the bright side, there is a tremendous amount of liberty available for those willing to take it.  We need to remember is liberty is a state of mind and those who are willing to subject themselves to the restrictions placed upon them will never have true liberty.  Liberty is about not letting others dictate to you what you should or should not do.

Here are some things I think you can do to have personal liberty.

  • You should believe as you wish and do as you wish within the law.  There are many who are afraid to do what they really want to do.  Do you want to have chickens in your backyard but are afraid of what the neighbor might think?  Do you want to drive a hybrid car but are afraid of what others will think of you?  Are you saving to pay off your house but are afraid other will see you as frugal or cheap?  Please remember what WE think and do matters.  Liberty is what makes you happy.  It is why you pursue happiness.  Doing what is best for your family should take top priority.
  • Create independence from the various systems.  You are not trying to escape from THE SYSTEM.  There is no such thing as one system.  There are many systems in place.  It is what gives our system so much resiliency.  For you to be truly free, you will need to start to separate yourself from the various systems.  Maybe it is solar panels for electricity or gardening for food or rain water collection,  you need to have some form of backup protection when one of these systems goes down.  You can’t have true liberty if you are dependent on these systems in totality without any backup.
  • Show everyone what you believe and not forcing them to believe.  Force is the wrong way to go about having someone believe in your message.  In the definition above it uses the word imposed, which is another way of force.  If you try to not pay your taxes and you will see force come your way.  True liberty loving individuals do not want to be told what to do and therefore the reciprocal is also true.  The best way to have someone be interested in what you do is to show them the joy you have by living a liberty lifestyle.
  • Solve your own problems.  People who love liberty want to succeed and fail based upon their own work.  If they succeed they want to relish in that success and reap the rewards which come from the hard work they put into the job.  Likewise if they fail, they realize no one is to blame but themselves.  They do not want someone else coming in a taking care of them.  They do not want other people’s(government) money.  They feel they did not deserve it or earn it.  Asking for help, if needed should come from your neighbors first, community second.  We want to  be prepared enough so when the government comes to help in a disaster we say ‘we do not need your help, we have everything covered’.  That is what communities/neighbors do for each other.
  • Argue your ideas not the worth of the individual.  Don’t say things like ‘you are stupid’.  Back up your ideas with facts.  Don’t resort to name calling.  Someone may not believe your system but a heartfelt conversation about your beliefs leave no one offended.
  • Create your own networks.  Those who have their own networks have no need for outside help.  They have set up systems internally so they can provide on their own. Start a gardening club.  Organize a sewing group.  Start a mechanics club.  Do these within your neighborhood.  You will get to know your neighbors and the talents they have as well as establish resources you would not have already known about.
  • Never stop learning.  An education is invaluable, get all you can.  This does not mean only higher education.  It could be learning how to use a computer program, how to work on a car, how to prune a tree, how to sew, how to cook.  There are so many skills you can learn to do without spending any money.  Use your network.  Always be learning.
  • Realize you will be ignored, made fun of, or attacked.  We live in a society if you vary outside the mainstream you are made fun of.  The mainstream means many things to different people.  Realize your happiness, joy and contentment is paramount.  You know prepared people thrive  and are satisfied knowing they did the best they could under the given circumstances.  I know it is hard, but ignore those around you who do not share your vision.  Be courteous and kind to all but realize not everyone is going to be like you.
  • Vote for what you believe in, not who will win.  We need to start standing for something.  Your vote is not thrown away when you vote for somebody who stands where you do.  You throw your vote away when you vote for the status quo.  We can only change ourselves one at a time.  Somebody has to lead and it might as well be you.
  • Know why you believe what you believe.  There is nothing worse than having a discussion with someone who regurgitates the talking points of a particular political party without having any reason why they believe that way.  You will need to say I believe ‘insert stance’ because ‘insert reason’, not just because the rich have too much power or the poor deserve our help.  Logic is on your side. Use it.  I believe in liberty because I believe the individual is the ultimate decision maker of his/her fate.  The success or failure resides in him/her.   Politicians make laws which ultimately determine favoritism of a certain outcome.

In the end remember what you do matters.  You are the decider of your own fate.  You changing your life changes the lives of others.  Liberty is a contagion we want everyone to have.  The human condition is to be free or liberated.

Go, be free, show the world what liberty means to you.  Become a better neighbor, husband, wife, son, daughter.  Show them preparedness means taking care of your family, neighbor, mother, or others when disaster strikes in their life.  Stand tall, be firm and resolute.  Following the path of liberty will do more than smooth life’s road, heck it may make it straight.

The future is bright

We as preparedness people are sometimes classified as “doomers”.  While this may be true to some extent, the movement as a whole is not all “doom and “gloom.  The future is bright and I believe tomorrow will be better than today.  We may have some hard times in the future, but I guarantee things will get better.  As we focus on the future, I want to tell you what I think.

What you do matters

The things you are doing right now to make your life better matter.  They are important and fulfilling.  Do not let anyone convince you other wise.  There are those because on normalcy bias may  belittle you into thinking you are not important and especially what you do is not important.  When you prepare, you become more confident and sure of yourself.  Those items are in contradiction to normalcy bias, “they” want you to do what they think you ought to do, not what is best for you.

You are a human being

You are a human being, not a gerbil.  You get to make your own decisions.  Please do not let anyone else make them for you.  We live in the freest country in the world.  That does not mean we are totally free, but we have the ability to do as we please for the most part.  If you want to have a garden you can.  If you want to raise a chicken, or open a business you can.  Remember as a human you make decisions to benefit you and your family.  The decisions you make are yours alone.

You are not alone

There are literally thousands if not millions of people out there with your similar mindset.  Just because you don’t see them does not mean they aren’t there.  We are a group of people who care about each other and our neighbors.  Find a community you can join.  Go to forums and join them.  You will see you are not alone.

Future Concerns- things I see coming

  • General Economic conditions-  I think the overall climate for 2012 will be good.  I am worried about the overall debt of governments in general.  I think 2013-2015 will turn worse.  This is a hard one to pin down, but we can not borrow money forever.  This is why it is important to get out of debt as soon as possible.
  • Peak oil-  Statistics show we have reached what looks like the top of oil production.  This is not to say we can not find more oil, but the energy required to reach it is  becoming greater.  My other concern is the governmental headache to start a new oil field.  There are other countries mainly China and India which are growing and needing oil.  Are we going to run out of oil? NO.  There is a shift coming, about who receives the oil.  Are you prepared for the shift?
  • agriculture failures-  I think the way we are farming is destroying our soil.  We are putting obscene amounts of pesticides and other things on and in our soil.  I believe this will start to rear its ugly head here in the future.  The public is starting to become more aware of the issues with conventional agriculture.
  • Water conflicts-  There is already much concern here in the west and has been for a long time about water rights and other water issues.  The ogallala aquiferin Texas is becoming depleted with no hopes of recovery in the near term.  It supplies water for most of the midwest. We need to start as individuals taking responsiblity for our water.  These conflicts are only going to increase in the coming years.
  • Global socialism-  I believe liberty and freedom are at stake on a global scale.  There are those who would try to take away freedoms  through global taxes and institutions.  Realize if you don’t value liberty on a personal basis it will be easier to give in to control on a larger scale.  Part of being a liberty conscience person means you take responsiblity for your life and those around you.

What can we do?

  • Learn skills-  Always be learning something new.  Be it a skill in the traditional sense or skills in the modern sence.  Learn about technology, it will ALWAYS be here.  It is what propels us forward.  Learn forgotten skills.  Learn to save seeds,  sew, cook, car maintenance, etc.
  • Outwardly show your love of liberty.  I think sometimes we are afraid to show others that we love liberty.  We love to be free and accept the consequences of our actions.  We are afraid to be a leader for fear we might be ridiculed.  Our neighbors are starving for someone to show them the future will be ok.
  • Realize yesterday was not better.  Were the 60’s so awesome when they were beating blacks.  Were the 50’s awesome when smoking was cool.  Were the 70’s great with hippy love and high energy prices.  We have a false sence of nostalgia.  I remember the late 70’s with high gas prices, our family of 4 bought a diesel rabbit with no A/C.  Looking back I am glad I was a kid then, since now I do not think I would have a car without A/C.  Also there is nothing we can change about the past, but we can change the future.  That is what we should be focusing on.
  • Be a first responder.  When disasters happen in our neighborhood we should be the first responder.  We can only do that if we are prepared to take care our ourselves first.  We can only reach out when we have our needs taken care of first.

Preparedness is a wonderful way of life and give great feeling of satisfaction and joy.  I look forward to a future which is bright and full of promise.  My we all forma bond that con not be broken.
